Golf: Breaking 80 - Consistently

Over the past three years I've become pretty obsessed interested in golf. I've played off and on for years, but three years ago took my first lesson. In 2010 I had a nine-hole playing lesson with Corey Pion at River Strand Golf Club and its been non-stop golf ever since. This year I'm breaking 80 (which I did on 10/12/12) and this section covers my progress toward that goal and beyond. Next goal: Single digit handicap.

Depressing inconsistent range session

Posted on January 13th, 2013

I suppose there were some good shots but it was very inconsistent. Frustrating. Thin shots still and lots of hooks. I can’t call them draws they were pull hooks, ugly. Some flushed shots, baby draws and balanced finishes. Staying down and thru the ball helps. But still swaying too much and still struggling with alignment and posture.

Simplifying my swing thoughts

Posted on January 6th, 2013

After a great week in Florida, a tune up with Corey, and some indoor practice with the Swingbyte and SloPro, I can finally say its time to simplify my swing thoughts. So here they are… Keep my posture more upright. I get too bent over, pull up the shoulders Keep my head as still as possible. My shoulder turn will happen without help Turn into a braced right leg (setup… Continue reading >

Tune Up with Corey Pion – River Strand Head Pro

Posted on December 28th, 2012

My Tune Up Another great aspect to River Strand is getting a chance to have Corey take a look at my swing. After the day I had yesterday, I was all messed up. I had shot 78 early in the week, had a chance to shoot low during other rounds, and yet yesterday I couldn’t hit anything. I had chalked it up to being tired and fatigued, but that wasn’t… Continue reading >

End of the week rounds at River Strand

Posted on December 27th, 2012

My Rounds Andrea came out on the course with us on Wednesday. I shot 86 with another 8 on Trib #9 and two 5s on par threes, so the round could’ve been better. But, I always enjoy it when Andrea comes out on the course with me. I hope one day she starts playing, but its nice to have her on the cart and actually see that the hard work… Continue reading >

Snuck out for practice on Christmas Day

Posted on December 25th, 2012

After the 78, I was pretty excited to get out and play. Unfortunately, the course is closed on Christmas Day. After working out, I noticed nobody was on the short game area at the range and I jumped at the opportunity to practice. I spent an hour. I started at the chipping/pitching area. I love this place. Man, I would be an awesome short game player if I had access… Continue reading >

Shot 78 at River Strand Christmas Eve Shotgun

Posted on December 24th, 2012

My Round I broke 80 at River Strand! Its funny, my best round last year was during the shotgun and now I’ve broken 80 and posted my lowest score to date during the shotgun. Something about this format really suits my game. And I’m thinking I know what some of it is. I’m playing with people I’ve never met. I know it sounds weird, but I think I keep my… Continue reading >

Played River Strand – Bradenton, FL (86)

Posted on December 23rd, 2012

My Round Well, I think I can say I have the tools to shoot in the 70s on a regular basis. Now I just need to stop making huge mistakes and wreck my score. I shot 86 on a challenging pair of courses, Trib/Sanc. I had 11 pars which might be the most pars I’ve ever had in my round, BUT I also had two 8s. And those 8s were… Continue reading >

Played Bobby Jones – Sarasota, FL (88)

Posted on December 23rd, 2012

The Course We played the British at Bobby Jones Golf Complex. Bobby Jones is Bobby Jones. If you live close, like Chris, this course is almost perfect for those early morning or late day rounds. Its pretty wide open, but maintained pretty well and even with a foursome, you can get around the track quickly. This isn’t the best Florida golf has to offer, but its a nice course and… Continue reading >

Hit some balls at PGA Superstore today and felt great

Posted on November 11th, 2012

I’m still not 100% and probably shouldn’t be hitting, but I had time to kill this afternoon. I wanted to try the RBZ fairway and Razr Fit. Obviously I’m thinking Razr Fit. But I also just wanted to see if my visualizing worked to keep my right leg/hip/foot more stable and on the ground during the swing. I was pleasantly surprised. Really solid shots and balance after impact. I think… Continue reading >

Nice to be able to memorialize a few rounds so far this year

I’ve had some good milestones so far this year. Now it’s low scores, fun shots and rounds I simply want to remember.

About Me

I'm the Vice President of Digital Innovation and Mobile, which is probably the coolest job title out there. You can learn more about my work in emerging technology on the About or Work Pages.

As for this site, it's a place where I can jot ideas down and share some of the stuff I'm working on. The views are my own and some of them might not make much sense, but hey, that's part of the process. I'm also working toward being a single digit handicap golfer, so I post a lot about my golf game.
